My Chronic Illness Journey

At the age of 14, my life took an unexpected turn when I began experiencing persistent flu-like symptoms. As my condition deteriorated and I struggled with daily tasks, my parents recognized the need for medical intervention and took me to my first of many doctor appointments. On January 27, 2000, I received the pivotal diagnosis of Lupus. This early identification was a rare blessing when public awareness of Lupus was limited, providing me with clarity amidst uncertainty. After several months of treatment with a rheumatologist, I was referred to Seattle's Children Hospital, where I was diagnosed with Lupus Nephritis and embarked on a four-year course of aggressive chemotherapy.

During this period, while receiving Western medical treatment, my mother actively sought alternative healing methods to support my recovery. We explored various approaches, including naturopathy, ancient healing practices, and energy work, while I learned vital self-care techniques and emotional processing. This combination of holistic and conventional medicine was instrumental in my healing journey, highlighting the significant potential of holistic practices for overall well-being.

Nearly two decades later, in 2020, I found myself navigating multiple new chronic illnesses, PCOS and Hashimoto's/Hypothyroidism, and anxiety. I had learned to manage my Lupus symptoms; however, I started experiencing fatigue, rapid hair loss, body weight changes, thyroid dysfunction, and additional changes in my body that made my body and life feel unrecognizable (again). During this time, I was experiencing multiple forms of trauma, psychological and physical unsafety, and witnessing my body's decline. My confidence and self-esteem declined as I navigated my health and the toxic environments in which I both worked and lived. I knew I needed more support at this moment.

Advocacy, therapy, medical staff, and family and friends became essential to rebuilding my health and life. While creating this support system, I felt a deeper calling. It was a pivotal moment at 4 AM when I felt an urgent need to release the energy that had taken hold of me. Desperate for a solution, I searched the ever-helpful internet and stumbled upon Reiki. It began a beautiful journey toward healing and a deeper exploration of ancestral rituals and practices.

My healing journey is ongoing. Ancestral and Indigenous healing practices helped me feel more connected and grounded with my body. These practices helped me understand that healing is not a destination, but an ongoing practice of connection, community, and balance. It is a journey that requires perseverance and adaptability.

While my chronic illness symptoms remain part of my daily life, I have learned to embody life with a chronic illness. Being present in my healing, reconnecting with my body, honoring its journey, and cultivating self-compassion have been crucial. It's not always easy (some days are tough), but it's a practice that has brought me a sense of peace and acceptance, and I hope it can do the same for you.

Connected with the Body is a platform that aims to foster a sense of community and connection among Women of Color navigating life with chronic illness. It seeks complementary ways to connect, increase awareness, and learn Ancestral knowledge. It seeks healing by modifying ancestral ways of being and upholding the belief that our bodies are not broken but our sacred homes. By sharing our healing journeys, we can support each other and find strength in our shared experiences.
